About the Author
Samantha Holder
Hello, my name is Samantha Holder, and I am the one-woman machine behind this website!
I am a British social history nerd and an MA Public History student at the University of Victoria.
My main research interests are Restoration England, royal court life, sex and gender, and women’s history. But like any good student my historical interests don’t stop there… I also love food history, binge watching historical documentaries, and now - thanks to the enormous amount of research I did for this website - I am also into heraldry.
Why Make this Website?
My MA thesis explored the surprising power, influence and sexual promiscuity enjoyed by elite women during the reign of Charles II. This was largely due to the social upheaval of the time due to the civil wars, the interregnum, and the restoration of the monarchy. But it was also due to Charles’ own way of running his court and his famous love of female companions and mistresses.
I switched to the Public History stream during my studies, but I wanted to find a way to stick with this fascinating topic, while fulfilling the public history role. A website seemed an ideal way to present all of my research: full of juicy details, fun to read (and write!), and easily accessible to a wide audience. Whether my readers are academics, fans of the royal family, have a special interest in Charles II, or are just general history nerds like me, I hope this website will have a little something for anyone who makes their way here.
I hope you enjoy your visit!
Ok, So What else Can You Do?
Lots of things!
I have presented at student conferences, written walking tours, designed a sensory experience for a historic house museum, worked on a graduate history journal, been a social events coordinator (several times), and volunteered on some big projects such as an exhibition for my old local, Chelmsford Museum… and of course, researched and written a LOT of essays!
In the professional world I’ve most recently been an events organiser and a project manager… as well as the odd stint at a museum and a heritage house.
